Trained in Modern,
West African and Ballet, Kenya Kalixte began the art of
Middle Eastern Dance in 1999 at Renate's Harem Belly Dance
Studio. During her first year there, she studied under her
teacher Dalia al Majid, owner of Daliah's Den Dance Studio.
Kenya later studied intense choreography with Renate, and
thereafter, she went on to teach beginner technique classes
for
two years at Renate's studio. Additionally, she went on
to become the rehearsal coach for Renate's dance company
- The Goddess Bast Harem.
Kenya accredits
her Middle Eastern Dance training to Renate and Dalia al
Majid, but also she gives accolades to her mentor, renowned
master teacher and choreographer, Yousry Sharif of The Egyptian
Academy of Dance.
In the year 2000, she joined the belly dance trio, Nubian
Moon Daughters Dance Ensemble as a principal member. But
additionally, she is a company member of the well known
Ivory Coast dance company, Kotchenga, under the direction
of Vado Diomande. Kenya's performance credits include such
venues
as New York Symphony Space, Charles Moore Dance Theatre,
Boces Cultural Arts Center, The Essence Awards, colleges,
weddings, stage events, countless restaurants, holiday celebrations
and other events.
Currently, Kenya teaches several classes in both beginner
and intermediate technique in New York.
